My Top 5 health benefits Practicing Yoga!

Hello friends! It’s been a while since my last post, but I do have some exciting news to share. I recently completed a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program and am now teaching yoga classes at the Golf Maine Park District (virtually, of course. COVID is sadly still a thing).


ANYWAYS, I really wanted to use this post to quickly share some benefits that I have noticed with practicing yoga. There are so many, but I’ll start with my top 5.


  1. Better posture

Before I started practicing yoga, I had terrible posture. And I mean TERRIBLE. My shoulders hunched forward, and at that time, little did I know that that was the reason I was having upper back pain, neck pain, and tension headaches. Once I started practicing yoga, my alignment improved so much and my pain resolved!


2. Upper body strength


Prior to yoga, all I really did for working out was running. I developed some pretty strong legs, but my upper body strength was bleh. When I started practicing yoga consistently, I realized that many of the poses helped build upper body strength. The more I did yoga, the stronger my arms got and now I can probably beat Hulk Hogan in arm-wrestling :)


3. Full Body Workout


Certain yoga sequences can be a full-body workout and also amazing for cardio. On days where I only have 10-15 minutes to workout, I will squeeze in some sun salutations to work some muscles and get my heart pumping!


4. Stress Reliever


I found yoga to be such a wonderful way to relieve stress. The poses, breathing exercises, and guided meditations really helped calm my mind and bring awareness to the present moment, instead of it drifting off into the past or future.


5. Feel-good feeling


I was nervous when I headed into my first yoga class 1.5 years ago. I wasn’t that flexible. I couldn’t keep still in a balancing pose. I remember feeling so lost and confused throughout the class. But I knew that I wanted to keep doing it because I had heard so many wonderful things about yoga. Eventually, the more I committed myself to the practice, the more I saw my body changing for the better. I still have a long way to go. But seeing how far I’ve come since day 1 makes me realize that we really can achieve anything we set our minds too!
